Rodent Problems: Trapping Rats in Darke County, Ohio

Rats are some of the smartest animals that you encounter in the wildlife removal business.  Unlike other animals, you can’t expect to set out several traps and catch all the animals in the area.  They learn quickly, which makes them some of the hardest things to trap.  If setting out a snap trap in one area catches one rat, it’s likely that you won’t catch any others this way.  It’s easy enough to deal with when you start trapping knowing it’s for rats, but when a customer has already tried to start the process themselves, it can make your job more difficult.

Another thing that slows down the rat trapping process, is when a house is in disarray.  Rodents and insects thrive in messy areas, which is why we recommend people with serious rodent problems that they deep clean the house and do their best to keep it that way.  When a house is clean, it makes it easier to identify problem areas and where to set traps.  A clean house that has never seen a rat trap, is a wildlife control technicians dream.

But what happens when the house is less than pristine and they’ve been trying to trap the animals themselves for weeks? Well, that’s about the closest thing to a nightmare.  That is when the durability and creativity of a trapper is tested.  We have specialty traps that we build to try and catch rats, but we usually only have to break them out in cases like this.  When that doesn’t work, that’s when it comes down to the brains of the technicians.  There have been times when we’ve had everyone sit down, review the job, and tell us the ideas they have to outsmart the rats.

Wildlife removal really comes down to more than just traps and bait; it’s experience, creativity, and hard work.

We resolve many types of wildlife control conflicts in Darke County and surrounding areas. Give me a call if you need expert animal removal and/or live wildlife trapping. We can also perform an inspection of your property to evaluate the problem.

The situations we resolve and main trapping and removal services we provide are: raccoon families in attics and chimneys, woodpeckers drilling siding. mud swallow nests on stucco, rats or squirrels thumping and bumping around inside walls and in attics, voles and gophers destroying lawns, skunks stealing pet food, bat infestations, and snakes living in crawlspaces and stone walls.

Along with physical damage and disease, wild animals also bring along disturbance and nuisance with all their commotion and smell. Raccoons and rats will fight all night and keep people awake; baby raccoons chirp and chitter like little birds; skunk smell takes the cake, but have you ever smelled a dead animal in your ventilation system? We have seen much, much more than these problems, but that is a general idea of the kinds of problems that I and my professional wildlife removal operators are prepared to solve.

Who’s the Expert here?

Sometimes in the wildlife removal business, the actual trapping isn’t the hard part.  There are times, not many, but times nonetheless where the customer is the one that gives you real trouble. While a lot of the time customers know what animal it is they’re dealing with (and usually when they don’t they trust that you know), but sometimes they are just wrong and are not willing to listen to what you have to say.  This isn’t a problem for most seasoned technicians, they know how to deal with customers for the most part; but the new workers can occasionally be too shy to correct the customer and can end up looking and treating for the wrong animal.

In one case about 2 years ago, it was a “squirrel” problem.  The customer was hearing lots of thumping and sounds from the walls of his house and since he had a lot of squirrels in the area that was who he attributed it too.  When our technician went to the site for an inspection, the customer interrupted anything that suggested it was another animal, so the tech politely stopped suggesting and set out traps.  After they hadn’t caught anything for several days, he approached me concerned that he wasn’t looking for squirrels but unsure how to approach the customer, so I went on site to take a look.

Well he was right, it was definitely not squirrels he had a problem with.  It only took me a couple of minutes to see what I’m sure my tech saw in the first place, small black spots dotting the wall just underneath a vent.  Bats, and most likely a whole colony of them.  When I tried to explain this to the customer, he interrupted and INSISTED that I was wrong and it was squirrels.  This is where the seasonal trapper has the advantage, because I didn’t back down.  I had to explain that the animal in question was in fact bats, but if he wanted to keep trapping for squirrels he would have to do it without us because it was a waste of our resources and his money to be hunting for the wrong animal.  I think that snapped him out of his squirrel frenzy because he sat quietly for a second and then agreed that it could be bats.

The next month we successfully vented out 100+ bats from the wall of his home and were able to seal off all entrances.  Needless to say, we’re good at our jobs and there’s a reason people hire us to do them.
